Richard Freeman

(1932-1991) Richard Freeman was born in Leicester, England and loved drawing and painting all his life. At the age of 23 he fulfilled a childhood dream by emigrating to Canada. Freeman was awed by the scenery he saw in the Rockies and the ranch country around Calgary. Here he found the subject matter that was to dramatically influence his painting; the scenery and the lifestyle of which he had dreamed for years. Freeman was the only Canadian artist to be invited as a founding member of the National Western Art Association in Lubbock, Texas. He was also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. A few of his awards include a silver medal from the NWA, and “Best of Show” at the Calgary Stampede.

Proficient in several mediums, Freeman used oil, pen, watercolour, and acrylic along with an innate sense of line and perspective, shadow and sunlight that projects the viewer into his paintings as if looking through a window. His excellent draftsmanship and compositions demonstrate Freeman as a true technician. Freeman left a legacy of paintings that celebrate the romanticism and mystery of a world that is soon to become extinct.

(1932-1991) Richard Freeman est né à Leicester en Angleterre et adorait dessiner et peindre. À l’âge de 23 ans, il réalise son rêve d’enfant et émigre au Canada. Freeman était en extase devant la beauté du paysage dans les Rocheuses et la région des ranchs à Calgary. Ici, il trouve le sujet qui influencera énormément sa peinture. Il avait enfin trouvé le paysage et le style de vie dont il avait toujours rêvé. Freeman était le seul artiste canadien invité à se joindre aux membres fondateurs de l’Association Nationale d’Art de l’Ouest à Lubbock au Texas. Il était aussi membre de la Fédération des Artistes Canadiens. Nous comptons parmi ses prix, une médaille d’argent du NWA, et « Best of Show » au « Calgary Stampede ».

Très habile avec plusieurs médiums, Freeman utilisait l’huile, plume, aquarelle, et acrylique. Son sens inné de la perspective et des lignes, ombrages et lumières font en sorte que le public voit à l’intérieur de ses peintures tel que l’on regarde dans une fenêtre. Son excellence en composition et dessin fait de Freeman un vrai technicien. Richard Freeman laisse un bon nombre de peintures qui célèbrent le romantisme et le mystère d’un monde qui est en voie de disparition.
